On a hot, humid afternoon in August, I went into the FESTAC area of Lagos to meet with Mr. Olarewaju Fasasi to talk about his urban gear label NAIJA NINJA. Mr. Fasasi (whom you may know as The Sound Sultan) started the clothing line because, according to him "when I started going for public shows, I saw the need to do my own outfits so there would be no chance of a fan watching me, wearing the same gear with me. It could be quite embarrassing".

I start this by confessing that I am not a morning person. Neither am I a night owl. I’m more of a high noon sort of gal. So when we finally snagged an interview with The First Lady of Storm Records, and I was informed that it was going to be on a Wednesday at 9am, I was not a happy camper.

It wasn’t Genevieve’s Pink Ball neither was it the annual Black and White Ball hosted by Citizens of Heaven (a church in Benin). This was the start of a one- man revolution to change the world with a select few - people born in September. The genius behind this idea is Master Innocent Odianosen, an undergraduate of the University of Benin. What started out as an earnest desire to unite as many September born people as possible for the sake of friendship and networking, quickly turned out to be the formation of a charitable organization called COCKtail septEMBER INT’L.

“I am hip hop” said Lil’ Wayne in a stage performance with lots of fire works behind him while receiving a standing ovation from renowned celebrities in front of him. My intrigue as to what he meant was stirred as I flipped my TV channels. This was the second time the issue of what hip hop was had boggled my mind.
